Numeracy

As part of our maths programme, we have been exploring Geometry - Shapes and their features.
Geometry is all around us and by combining different shapes, we learnt we can form new shapes and pictures.   Here we are using playdough and different length sticks to be creative.
Monday Maths Challenges involve a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Approach.
At Whakarongo School, we are developing ourselves as Computational Thinkers.  Our key concept is Logic - using prediction, and analysing information.  Our key approaches are Tinkering (experimenting with materials) and Creating (designing and making).

We have been taking Fairytale Problems, and finding ways to create solutions to these.

Week 3: "There is a big bad wolf sneaking around the woods and the 3 little pigs need to make a house that is strong enough to withstand his huff & puff". Select and experiment with a range of materials to build a house that will stand up to the wind. Testing our house structures using an electric fan.
Liam and Kaleb share what materials and shapes they used to create their piggy's house.
Week 2: "Rapunzel is stuck up in her tower, she no longer has long hair. How can she get down?"
In groups, brainstorm - what could we make to help get her down? What materials would be best to use? Design your invention. Build. Trial. Tweak. Share back. Reflect.
